Countdown to the European Parliament elections...
The European Union flag
The European flag consists of 12 golden stars
in a circle on an azure background. It symbolizes solidarity among the peoples
of Europe. The number of stars has nothing to do with the
number of member countries. 12 is a symbol of perfection and the circle is a
symbol of unity. The flag's designer has said that a source of inspiration was the
twelve-star halo of the Virgin Mary. The Council of Europe created the flag in 1955.
In 1985, it was adopted as the emblem of the European Union.
